Librairie Arabe de L'Olivier - Arabic books and more I haven't been to this library yet actually. I met the owners at the Salon du Livre et de la Presse of Geneva, 2 years ago and saw their display of books in Arabic and other languages from the Arabic world. They also had a wide choice of music CD's and, especially, of movies DVD's (all zero zone). This is what actually attracted my attention most, as I really enjoy watching movies from around the world. I found some great classics from the Egyptian cinema of the 1930's - 1960's, with good English subtitles. I have decided to tagcrumb it because I have recently received emails advertising the cultural events this library is organizing and sponsoring, which sounded really interesting. I'm definitely thinking of going there at some point soon. The food is good, and I enjoyed my "fondant au chocolat", although it wasn't the original receipe, which is actually really difficult to make. The price is a bit high, I think, but I guess, that's what you have to pay in order to spend an evening is such a splendid landscape. Ariadyn 591868073 2009-02-04T15:22:45+01:00 Youth Hostel Palagiovani (Locarno) This youth hostel is quite a convenient place to stay at when you have a limited budget and need to be near the town center, like when you are attending the International Film Festival of Locarno. It is about 1 km away from the train station and 0.6km. from the central Piazza Grande. Bus 2 and 7 stops there, that also go to the train station. It is organized like a Swiss watch, combining an ecological conscience with an efficient management of the various types of tourists coming in and out. I have stayed one week there in a 2-persons room, which was furnished with bunk-beds, a lavatory sink and a double-locker for the clothes, as well as a small desk. Wall-lamps are provided at the pillow height of each bed, and there are about 4 plugs. The showers and toilets are on each floor. Everything is clean and neat. The rooms are locked with magnetic card and each client is provided with another magnetic card that gives access to the hostel 24/24. There is no wireless system, but a computer in the lounge is available for all the clients of the hostel. The breakfast is included in the fee, but noon and evening meals have to be paid separately and you have to announce yourself a day before at the reception to be allowed in the restaurant after breakfast. On request, they will also prepare launch boxes to take with you if you go on day excursions. There is a patio where every Saturday evening they make a BBQ. The personnel speaks English, French, German and, of course, Italian. He summarized his ambition as follow: "This is an ambitious undertaking. It tries to comprehend humanity in its entirety, its history as it is reflected in spiritual creativity throughout the ages and in all parts of the world." Although it is now used by several thousands cars a day, that shuttle between the two sides of the border, as Italians come to work in Switzerland, the view on the Lake of Lugano and the Alps is simply breathtaking. I have just spent two gorgeous days living in a house near the famous Villa Favorita, once host to the Thyssen art foundation. If you visit this side of Ticino, I definitely recommend that you try to get a hotel room in Castagnola, the commune bordered by the Via Riviera.
